Gurnee was established as a stop on the Chicago-Milwaukee Stage Line in 1836. It was the first village in the township area to be named, and it is snuggly located near the Des Plaines River, which made it an important crossroad for the Waukegan toll road. In 1873 the railroad linked it to Warren and markets in Chicago due to stops on the train line.
It was incorporated in 1928 and had remained mostly as a rural and agricultural area on the outskirts of Chicago until the latter half of the twentieth century. The village of Gurnee eventually became the home to Great America, which is one of the largest amusement parks in the Midwest. It also boasts the largest shopping mall in the Chicago area which opened in 1991 and has an approximate population of 30,000 residents within Lake County.
