Buffalo Grove is officially known as the Village of Buffalo Grove which is in Lake and Cook Counties, a suburb of Chicago located 30 miles northwest of downtown Chicago. It sits on 9.6 square miles and has a total of approximately 45,000 residents.
The native American Potawatomi’s, called it Buffalo Creek (translated to Buffalo Grove in English) because of the creek that flowed through much of the village. It wasn’t officially incorporated until 1958 even though it had a long history before then. And its location is adjacent to a forest preserve that is still known for being a nesting spot for many grassland birds, including Eastern Bobolinks and Eastern Meadowlarks.
Today, almost all schools in the village are academically awarded for their accomplishments in education. It boasts Willow Stream Park, which is the largest in Buffalo Grove that sits on 54 acres. Complete with bike paths, picnic areas, and sports fields, it is still maintained to continue to look like the natural wetland that it always was.
