Palatine is a village in Cook County, that extends into some areas of Lake County, being unincorporated. It is the seventh-largest community in Cook County and the 18th-largest community in Illinois with approximately 70,000 residents in the northwestern suburb of Chicago.
It was settled in 1866 by George Ela, the first European-American who is thought to have built a log cabin in an area now called Deer Grove. But it’s said that Joel Wood is the one who surveyed the area and laid out the village, earning him as the founder, and a street with the name Wood remains to this day. The village was built around a new train station, the Chicago and Northwestern Railway.
From 1914 to 1931 Palatine was the home for the Cook County Fair, whose land is now a subdivision. Fairgrounds Park was established in recognition of the former days of the County Fair. The town took off growing in the 1970s and is included among Chicago’s growing suburban areas.
